Domaine PIERRE USSEGLIO

by Jean Pierre & Thierry Usseglio

COUNTRY: France
REGION: Southern Rhone
APPELLATION: Chateauneuf Du Pape

The Domaine Pierre USSEGLIO is a family business, created in 1948 by Françis USSEGLIO from Italy. We develop our red Châteauneuf-du-Pape in a traditional way with half of our vines who are more than 65 years old.

Tillage has been passed down to us for several generations. The diversity of the soil, which constitutes the richness of our appellation, is present within the Domaine Pierre Usseglio (Limestone Soils, Rolled Pebbles, Sands, Sandstone and Clays). Our plots are spread over the entire area of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. From then on, we are attentive to the soil and we work our vineyard manually with respect throughout the seasons. We let nature express itself freely. It is thanks to this difference in terroir that we can offer you complex, silky and balanced wines.

The plot selections up to the harvest harvested manually at optimal maturities is our secret. We bring great importance to sorting, both in the vines and at the arrival at the cellar. Domaine Pierre Usseglio respects the traditions of winemaking.

Wine Region:

southern rhone

Compared to Northern Rhone, Southern Rhone is significantly larger. Ninety-five percent of all wines in Rhone come from Southern Rhone, with an average vintage totalling up to 380 million bottles per year.

The hot and dry climate of Southern Rhone – in comparison to the northern portion – hosts fifteen grape varieties under Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Droughts, limited irrigation, and the various terroirs and microclimes in the region produce a diverse range of wines. Due to wine fraud in the 20th century, viniculturists were forced to create and impose the AOC system. Thus, said AOC originated in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

In general, Southern Rhone wines are more alcoholic, yet lighter and fruitier than wines from Northern Rhone. Orchard fruit flavors with Provencal herb notes and spicy accents are prevalent in the rose, sparkling, and red and white wines made in the area.
